Conceived by real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance as a residential community anchored by major manufacturing industries, the City of Torrance was a visionary experiment.

The year of its founding, 1912, was a fervent year in the South Bay and the Los Angeles region.  It was a fervent year across the nation: the Progressive movement was swelling; workers were demanding justice from corporations; and artists were developing works that would speak to broad audiences in a distinctly American language.

Our series takes its theme from the dreams and ambitions of several artists and activists who were bringing into being new works and new ways of doing things.

We will present these visionary Americans speaking to us in their own words.  We begin with J.S. Torrance in a work adapted from his unpublished autobiography, then the labor activist Mother Jones from articles and speeches given during one of the most famous labor battles in U.S. history, then Western novelist and adventurer Zane Grey surrounding the publication of his break-through work, then to the poet Amy Lowell pushing wide open the boundaries of American literature, and finally to L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz, as he brings into existence an entirely new world .

Subscribe now to experience each of these great people brought to life in solo performances by great actors in the intimate setting of the Nakano Theatre!
